Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven: Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again. Luke 6:37-38
By the time this magazine reaches you we will have held the 2017 Buckland St Mary Annual Parish Church Meeting and hopefully will have a new Churchwarden as I am standing down after three years in the role. I still hope to remain on the PCC and assist in the work of the churches of Buckland St Mary. My grateful thanks to all the PCC members who have supported me during this time, especially, of course, dear Vicki Bell, and also those who have also helped though not PCC members. I am sure you will continue to offer your support, help and guidance to my successor. A list of the appointments made at the Annual Meeting will appear in the June edition of the CBO News.
The April Community Coffee Morning was to have been for the Samaritans but because of a late cancellation by that organisation, the event went ahead but to raise funds for the Buckland Community Singers and over £175 was raised. Th e Singers sing purely for pleasure at local residential homes and societies such as the Chard Blind Club. New members always welcome so please contact Lynda Creek for details.
The May Community Coffee Morning will be held from 10.30 till 12.00 noon on the 13th May 2017 in Buckland St Mary Church in aid of Kids Club Kampala: a charity founded by our Youth Worker, James Hall, which seeks to bring hope and a future, especially through education, to children who live in extreme poverty in Uganda. It would be great to see you and it’s a good time to catch up with friends and neighbours.
Community Coffee Mornings for 2017 – if you would like to run a Community Coffee Morning, at Buckland St Mary Church, for a charity of your choice, please contact the co-ordinator, Margery Harkness, on 01460 234599 or email firstname.lastname@example.org Coffee mornings are usually held on the 2nd Saturday of the month but other dates may be possible so please enquire. Currently, there are spaces in August, September and December 2017.
Rogation – the word “rogation” is from the Latin rogare, “to ask.” Historically, the Rogation Days (the three days before Ascension Day which this year falls on Th ursday 25th May 2017) were a period of fasting and abstinence, beseeching God’s blessing on the crops and the labours of those who produce them.
Part of the tradition involved ‘beating the bounds’ of the parish, in which a procession of parishioners, led by the minister, would walk the boundary of their parish, carrying banners, and praying for its protect ion in the forthcoming year. In our case the Benefice is a bit too large to walk it all in one go so this year we will just walk a part of it.
On ‘Rogation Sunday’, 21st May 2017 we will have a Rogation Ramble to mark this festival: meeting at Churchinford Village Hall at 8.45am for bacon butties and tea and coffee; and then leaving Churchinford at 9.25am to walk to Otterford for a 10.30am Benefice Service; and after the service walking to Birchwood Church to complete our worship and enjoy a ‘Bring and Share’ lunch together.
You are welcome to join in all or just a part of the ramble and, if you are less mobile, please just drive to the relevant church to join us. Items for the Bring and Share lunch can be dropped off at Churchinford Village Hall or Otterford Church and someone (!) will bring them on to Birchwood or drop them at Birchwood first. We look forward to welcoming you.
