Do you remember – Have you Information?

THE BUCKLAND ST MARY WAR MEMORIAL

Autumn 2013

As we head towards the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War in 2014 I thought it would be a good time to find out more about the men commemorated on Buckland’s War Memorial.  Who were they?  What Regiment did they belong to?  When and how did they die?  Where are they buried?  Who were their families? Are there still family members living in the area?

Having researched their background, I hope to compile a folder which could be kept in the Church and referred to by those who are interested. Much of this information is readily available using such tools as the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website and the Somerset Heritage Centre.

However, I’m sure there are those in Buckland who may know more than these bare facts.  Does anyone in the village have memories or information about their families?  Any little piece of remembrance is valuable. To remind you, their names are:

FRED BILLING

FRED BUTTLE

WILLIAM BUTTLE

WILLIAM GRABHAM

JAMES HARDWILL

WILLIAM HECTOR

FRANK KNIGHT

R. STANLEY NORTH

HARRY PAINTER

WILLIAM POOK

WALTER C. PRING

WILLIAM J. PRING

FRANK W. SMITH

And in WWII

LOUIS ASHFORD

JAMES MUDGE

It would be good to turn this bare list of names into something to recall the living, breathing men.
